MICROBIZ MASTERCLASSES NEXT EVENT – MONDAY 16TH NOVEMBER

October 26, 2009 by Angie Martin

Every year, the Horsham Microbiz event that takes place in March gets bigger and better and feedback from visitors and exhibitors shapes the style and content of future events. With people wanting even more from Microbiz, masterclasses have been launched to give added value to all small businesses and those thinking of starting a business. These events are not just about bringing small business owners together to network, but also about introducing motivational and inspirational speakers to provide great advice at the same time.

The next free to attend Masterclass in Horsham will be on the evening of Monday 16th November and promises to be lively, interactive, inspirational and motivational. It is organised in conjunction with Global Entrepreneurship Week and Home Enterprise Day and aims to encourage more people to start a business from home. If you thinking of starting a business from home, or if you know someone thinking of starting a business, don’t miss out on this inspirational evening. Book your place now.

Light refreshments will be provided. This event is only open to Horsham District Businesses. If you would like to find out more about the event, call the Business Development team on 01403 215529 or email business.development@horsham.gov.uk.

Cabin Fever

September 28, 2009 by Angie Martin

RIMG1702The great day arrived around 2 weeks ago when the cabin was delivered. It took 1.5 hours to take everything off the lorry and then a further 2 hours to move to back garden (lorry driver only paid to deposit in front garden!)

There the cabin sat for a week, as we waited with excitement for David, Roger, Ben and Gordon to arrive (otherwise known as Uncle David, Uncle Roger, Cousin Ben and Grampa – Granny and decided she would rather go to St Tropez – whatever for?). The morning of assembly arrived.

RIMG1705Cooked breakfast (I am told builders must have one) and then thrown into the garden (them, not me). I drove off with son to his guitar lesson, wondering what I would come home to? Perhaps it would be built? Perhaps one of them was already in hospital? Perhaps the beers had already been opened?

Well, I have to say they had got a long way – all four walls were up. However they later informed me that was the easy, quick bit. The roof was not as simple, and seemed to go up and come down several times. Several cups of tea later and a round of fish and chips, and they were really cracking on. By the end of Saturday the roof was on and there was a window. Now they were off to the pub – back in an hour for dinner – funny – they didn’t invite me to the pub??

Sunday dawned, and everyone was looking a little jaded but determined to complete the task – doors went on, waterproof membrane on roof and then wonderful workers had to return back to the cold North. They had done a fabulous job, and worked like Trojans. The rest was up to Duncan and I……..

‘31 North 62 East’ Review – Julie Maxted

September 21, 2009 by Angie Martin

A good night out was how I’d describe the Premiere of  ’31 North 62 East’, the film produced by local company, Fact Not Fiction Films Ltd.

A psychological political thriller, ‘31 North 62 East’ tells the story of a British Prime Minister who gives up the position of an elite special forces (SAS) unit in Afghanistan to ensure an 80 billion pound arms deal goes through – thus assuring his re-election. All soldiers in the SAS unit are thought to have died, until 2 months later, one of them (a female Captain), is found by Italian special forces and returns to the UK to investigate matters.

All the stars of the film were there; John Rhys Davies – best known for his roles in Raiders of the Lost Ark and Lord of the Rings; Marina Sirtis of Star Trek fame; Heather Peace from Ultimate Force and London’s Burning, plus Craig Fairbrass, mainly known for his tough guys roles and playing Dan in Eastenders a few years ago.

There were over 400 people in attendance and champagne and canapés were laid on for us.  It did get rather hot though, with the Chairman of the Council actually fainting.  We had to take a couple of breaks outside ourselves, just to get some air.

It was great to see the stars just mingling and chatting with everyone and hubby and I managed to have quite a chat with Craig Fairbrass.  He was impressed about a particular film my husband had remembered him in and even shook his hand in acknowledgement.

The film itself was good and watchable, and although not spectacular, definitely worth seeing, especially with the references to Horsham and scenes in the local area.   Tristan Loraine,  the director actually made the film for less than £300,000 which is apparently about 12 minutes worth of filming for Eastenders, so he has done a magnificent job.

I myself made the most of being invited to a Premiere and had a pampering afternoon beforehand; having my hair, nails and make-up done professionally.  As many of you know, I have lost 4 stone in the last few months, so wore a dress than I haven’t worn for several years and can now fit back in to which was great for me.  The evening went all too quickly though and it was back to reality with a vengeance the next day!

Base in Place!

August 27, 2009 by Angie Martin

NOW WE HAVE BASE.  The weather held OK last week, and the Tingleys, with a little bit of help from Barney (more hindrance really) completed the base for the Garden Office. We were asked if we would like Barney footprints in the wet concrete (I thought they were joking – they were not) – it seems many dog owners like that sort of thing – I am obviously not a typical dog owner and declined. Only problem now is – there are small bits of concrete in the garden which we have endeavoured to pick up, but invariably Barney finds them and eats them! Yes I do feed him, but he obviously thinks it is not enough, and as well as bananas now likes concrete!!!

The next step is the delivery of the Garden Office which is due on Monday 7th September.

 I can’t wait.

As a way of christening the Garden Office, and as I have friends who need and use the services of Macmillan Cancer Support – I am taking part in the Worlds Biggest Coffee Morning – so please if possible do put the date in your diary and join me for tea or coffee in the new Garden Office on Friday 25th September from 10am- 12noon. All you need to do to contribute is give 20 minutes of your time, your conversation and most of all a small donation to Macmillan Cancer Support. I really do hope you can all join me. Please let me know if you are coming. This really is a very worthy cause.

The Tingleys Arrive!

August 20, 2009 by Angie Martin

Last week Bob Tingley arrived with his tape measure to map out the area I wanted and to go away and come back with a quote that wouldn’t distress my husband too much! We wanted the Tingleys to put down the reinforced concrete base, which will also include a damp-proof membrane. They will then come back after the cabin had gone up and put a stepping stone path down to the doorway of the cabin. Building Home Office 1Building a Home Office 2

I know the Tingleys pretty well – they put a patio and pathway in at our previous house, and also have put in the driveway here and also a patio and pergola. They are a team of 3 brothers, who drink lots of tea and always seem to be happy. Their work is second to none. I highly recommend them.

Duncan and I spent the weekend clearing the area from all the undergrowth – we really had let the ivy take over the bottom of the garden. Yesterday the skip arrived – although we were unsure why we required a skip. The dog doesn’t like the skip and refuses to walk past it – which is a bit difficult seeing as it has to be passed to get out of our drive. Hence me pulling and Barney sitting with his bum firmly entrenched on paving. He may not survive to see my garden office!!! At 8am this morning theTingleys arrived – they will be with us for about 2 days. I introduced them to Barney (the dog) who seemed to make the right impression, only for him to let me down by interrupting Bob’s break, by pinching his banana just as he was taking a bite! No banana left, including the skin! Me thinks Barney better stay indoors. After digging down to measure everything out, it was declared that indeed a skip was not required and was being sent back – which meant we didn’t have to pay for it (that should please Duncan).

And now the digging starts – we are up against the weather as tomorrows forecast is not looking good.

Pimms, shoes and a sunny evening on the terrace

August 17, 2009 by Angie Martin

Thanks to Jo Parker for sharing with us the story of Shoe Queen and her business start up ‘do’s and ‘don’t’s. The shoes were fantastic!

Mannings Heath Golf Club was as welcoming as ever. What more could a girl ask for – Pimms and cream tea on the terrace in the sunshine overlooking the Waterfall Course, and shoes to die for!
